What affects the cost of water extraction?
The volume of water, the floor area affected, what the flooring is made of and how much of it has to be lifted. Water that spread into two or three rooms takes longer than a contained spill. What should I do while I wait?
Shut the water off if the valve is easy to reach and dry to stand at. Stay off wet flooring near outlets, appliances and light fittings, and do not use a household vacuum on standing water. Lift curtains and rugs clear if you can do it without walking through the wet area.
Does the carpet have to come out?
Not always. Carpet itself often dries; the padding underneath usually does not, and on a slab the pad is what holds the water against the concrete. The decision is made from readings taken under the carpet. See structural drying for how that is checked.
